Little Girl Swim Lessons

I just think there's nothing cuter than tiny little girls in their little swimsuits! (That and little tiny girls in dance recitals.) This was Ashley and Reagan's second year to be in swim lessons. They started off pre-season at an indoor pool.

Overall it was a good experience except they teach them to roll on their back to breathe which can be good and bad. It's generally not the way I want them taught but all the indoor places do it that way. But they got comfortable in the water all over again before the summer started.

Then they had lessons the rest of the swim season with the big girls' swim coach, Coach Matt. (I'm sure he would love to know that I am blogging about him.)

Ashley swims super fast but also freaks out about breathing. So until she quits freaking out about that, she can't really progress. She CAN breathe and keep going but instead she panics and just starts yelling help. You have to keep telling her to put her head back down and keep swimming. Sometimes she will and sometimes she just keeps up the charade til you have to get her. This photo below is about her norm for how far she will go. If you see the line across the pool though she DID swim to it a couple times. Her problem is really in her head and that's it. Once she gets over it she's going to haul booty.

Reagan is very teachable. Her strokes her kind of slow and smooth, but she does it nonetheless. She also after just a few times learned how to side-breathe. Something my older girls struggled with forever. She amazes me at how coordinated she is. She potty trained herself. She taught herself to pump her own swing when she was a young 3. At a young 4, she taught herself to hula hoop. Now she is side-breathing and easily going half the length of the pool.

Matt giving Reagan a ride back after a very far swim into the deep end!

Girls hopefully are swim team ready for next year! (Like Reagan's attempt at putting on her goggles? Or gobbles as Ashley would say.)

Can't wait to see what they're capable of in another year.

  1. Why do they tesch the kids to roll onto their backs to breathe? That's weird. Oh well, like you said, it does at least get them comfortable in the water.

Isn't it amazing to watch your little kid be really good at something. Of course I think my kids are great and can do anything, but to watch them excel, is just awesome. I hope the girls love swim team next year! I love that picture of Reagan in her goggles.
